La Resurrección
Es sorprendente que de esta única representación de la resurrección no hayan réplicas, mientras que la pintura de La Última Cena de Leonardo en Milán, pintada en la misma época, fue copiada miles de veces por sus contemporáneos y en la posterioridad. A lo mejor, ningún artista se consideraba a la altura del gran Maestro Mathis, y así esta resurrección sigue siendo singular en su luminosidad y magnitud.
El mejor texto sobre esta obra, según mi parecer, nos lo ha dejado Albrecht Haushofer (1903-1945). Es en forma de un soneto que escribió estando preso en Moabit, después de haber sido perseguido por los nazis.. Haushofer sabía que no saldría vivo, pero lo mantenían con vida en prisión en caso que pudiera ser útil porque había sido diplomático y dominaba muchos idiomas. Pero unos diez días antes de que los Aliados liberaran Berlin, todos los presos de esta cárcel fueron fusilados. Su hermano Heinz Haushofer buscó y encontró su cuerpo, y en sus puños cerrados halló dos folios cubiertos con 80 poesías en forma de sonetos que había escrito secretamente en su tiempo en prisión. En mil imágenes le he visto

The Resurrection
It is surprising that there are no replicas of this unique representation of the resurrection, while Leonardo's painting of The Last Supper in Milan, painted at the same time, was copied thousands of times by his contemporaries and others in later years. Perhaps no artist considered himself equal to the great Master Mathis, and thus this resurrection remains singular in its luminosity and magnitude.
The best text on this work, in my opinion, has been left to us by Albrecht Haushofer (1903-1945). It is in the form of a sonnet that he wrote while incarcerated in Moabit, after having been persecuted by the Nazis. Haushofer knew that he would not be released, but they kept him alive in prison in case he could be useful because he had been a diplomat and was fluent in many languages. But about ten days before the Allies liberated Berlin, all the prisoners in this prison were shot. His brother Heinz Haushofer searched for and found his body. In his closed fists he found two pages covered with 80 poems in the form of sonnets that he had secretly written during his time in prison. In 1946 Heinz published these poems expressing a deep spiritual dimension (Moabiter Sonnette).
Qui resurrexit
In a thousand paintings have I seen Him
As judge of the world, angry and august,
As crowned with thorns, as the Madonna’s child —
But none could I retain.
Now I feel that only one is really valid:
The way that He revealed Himself to Master Mathis —
Not at all the pale figure, tending towards death,
But the Being surrounded by light:this one is the Christ.
Human artistry alone cannot have painted thus:
Effortlessly throwing off the dark shadow of the tomb,
The head crowned with golden rings of light —
By all colours unworldly illuminated,
Still a Being, but with unfixed contours,
God’s son rises up towards the lap of God.
